Last blog question for semester one- Banksy's work

Last blog question for semester one- Banksy's work

How can we categorize Banksy's work -graffiti or murals?

Research Banksy's work to attempt to answer this question.

What are some of the differing opinions about Banksy's work?

Not only is his work controversial because it is essentially graffiti, but because his stenciled works of "art' often fetch thousands at auction. Most critics agree that art is not simply about communication per se but about substance; about that which is being communicated and how universally it is understood. Since the rise of postmodernism this ideal has been propagated in as many stimulating ways as it has dull ones but Banksy himself can never be accused of making art for art's sake. He speaks to the public in its own voice and, whatever your opinion about the depth and grandeur of his work (or lack thereof) there's no denying that his message resonates with the general public and in so doing, places Banksy at the helm of modern art.

How does his work sit in relation to consumerism? Can his work be sold? Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti, he only sells the real life thing. Banksy’s work is sold in art auctions, also online auctions such as Ebay. Since the meteoric rise in the value of Banksy's work, it has been known for art auctioneers to sell his street graffiti on location and then leave the removal of the work in the hands of the person who purchased it.

Who is Banksy? Do we know his true identity?
Banksy is a pseudonymous British graffiti artist. He is believed to be a native of Yate, South Gloucestershire, near Bristol and to have been born in 1974, but his identity is unknown. Banksy has managed to tag walls in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans and the Palestinian segregation wall in the West Bank, among others, and has remained anonymous through his "career" to avoid prosecution.

Upload 2-3 images of Banksy's work that you find interesting, and comment on the ideas behind the work.

- I like this image because to me it kind of looks like a shadow of an actually girl floating up into the sky being carried up by balloons. It’s in a public place and is something that would make you double take when walking or driving past it.

I picked this one as one that I liked because at first it just looked so real! I love how it looks like the kids had just climbed over the wall from the other side. It gives the plain grey wall some colour and makes the wall interesting.

This artwork is more comical than the others I have chosen. I found it interesting because it is ironic in the way that man is willing to hang out the window in the nude, just so he does not get found by the husband.

  1. Hey Emma

Blogging almost over haha. From my research, I dont think that Banksy actually sells his physical work at auction, its generally the property owners that auction it off, or just art auctioneers trying to make a quick buck, they often sell the work and leave it up to the buyer as to how they get it off the wall/to its new location. If Banksy were to sell it himself he wouldnt be anonymous anymore.

This is partially why I believe that banksy is more then one person, as travelling around the globe making artworks would be extremely expensive, and as he doesnt profit from the work this would seemingly be an impossible endeavour.

  2. Banksy is a street artist. Even though he has been famous in the world by his graffiti arts, his face has never shown anywhere. Drawing graffiti on walls around his city is what he is doing. One of interesting things is that he does not have any commercial intentions for them like earning money. However, some argue that he is a wrong way because his chosen sites are public places. Despite this circumstance, to me his abilities are awesome and unique. I like his works in a way that is stencilling. His works really seem to link between his own ideas and original sites, as well as giving people warnings. Shown from ‘http://www.artofthestate.co.uk/banksy/Banksy-gillett-square-dalston-bboy-mat.htm’ this image is my favourite one. As it shows, the original background of the wall is well linked to his graffiti I think. From ‘http://www.artofthestate.co.uk/banksy/banksy_tesco_pledge_your_allegiance.htm’ another graffiti is also shown the relation between his own and original background. His chosen wall’s background is very nice it illustrated old-fashioned well.

  3. His work can be describe as both random and simple, depending on how you see art through your eyes. Banksy's work is very grungy and almost messy, but we can tell a lot of time and preparation has been put into each work of art.

  4. Some people think it is great because images making us to think deeper to figure out messages that Graggiti is trying to tell. it is the way to tell the truth through his art about the society that we are living in, his way of making art work challenge the art, the politics, because he is telling what art truly is about. "He sees the i"rony and hypocrisy of our mundane lives (at times) and asks us to view a larger picture.Graffiti is art piece that artists make to sell in public for the pleasure of passers-by, usually tourists, in order to earn money.A mural is any piece of artwork painted directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface. First of all his work assaults you with the fact that it's graffiti. If you look his work into details, you realize its mixture with graphic visually and style from urban to stancilied image to challenge the socially and making people to think. His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics. His street art, which combines graffiti writing with a distinctive stenciling technique. He creates some magical and truly original posters and paintings. He always put something that seems destroy the whole painting, but however, if you take more look at the painting ,you realise that, it is not destroyed, it is the connection between viewer and the work, because it makes me to think about the meaning behind the work and relate the work to today's society about human, politics.
